As I sit here trying to compile all the World War II oral histories that I have accumulated over the years from the wonderful families of my hometown, Montcross, North Carolina, I am reminded of the fact that these families suffered and sacrificed just like those from other parts of the country. The oral history of the Johnson family is not unique, but it is a microcosm sample of what other families went through during the four years that America was engaged in the bloody conflict of World War II. I have promised Lillie Johnson, who so eloquently told me her family’s story, which I would tell it honestly and completely. This is their story.
